How to choose a good LASIK surgeon?

Choosing a good LASIK surgeon is very important when you decide to have LASIK surgery. You should carefully evaluate the experience of the LASIK surgeon and ask as many questions as you feel are necessary. A good LASIK surgeon will be able to answer your questions in terms you can understand. You should visit several LASIK offices to determine which LASIK surgeon's communication style best fits your needs. You will also get a good feel for the atmosphere of the LASIK office by visiting more than one.

Ask for referrals.

If you have a regular "eye doctor" ask them for a referral. Tell them you are considering LASIK surgery and you are looking to evaluate a few LASIK surgeons in your area.

Make an appointment

After you have located a few LASIK surgeons, you will want to schedule an appointment time for a consultation. During this consultation you will have the opportunity to ask your questions regarding the procedure. Some questions to ask include:

  • How long has the LASIK surgeon been performing LASIK procedures?
  • How many LASIK procedures has the surgeon performed?
  • What percentage of those surgeries performed resulted in the patient receiving 20/20 vision?
  • Do you have some previous patient's contact information who had the same procedure that I will be having?
  • Have you ever had your license revoked, restricted or suspended?

Get a 2nd Opinion

After your consultation, you should seek another consultation with a 2nd LASIK surgeon. Use the information you collected in your first consultation to discuss with the 2nd LASIK surgeon. Often you will receive insight into how the answers were given from the first surgeon.
