Are you a good candidate for LASIK?

In order to determine if you are a good candidate for LASIK eye surgery you should have an eye examination with an ophthalmologist.  Your ophthalmologist will follow some of these general LASIK guidelines to determine if you are a good candidate for LASIK eye surgery.  Below are some of those general LASIK requirements:

The ideal LASIK candidate is over the age of 18.  This is to ensure that the eye has developed properly and matured. 

Your vision should be stable for at least one calendar year prior to LASIK surgery and free from eye infection or injury.

Good LASIK surgery candidates should not be affected by an autoimmune disorder.  If you are, you should convey this information immediately prior to the exam.

If you have scarring in the cornea due to a preexisting injury or occurrence, you may not be a good candidate for LASIK eye correction.

LASIK patients should not be pregnant or nursing on the date of the eye correction procedure.

Individuals with dry eye syndrome or with dilated pupils beyond 7 millimeters are not good candidates for LASIK.

During the pre-LASIK exam to determine if you are a good candidate, the ophthalmologist will exam your eyes and review your medical history.  The ophthalmologist will discuss your LASIK options such as Wavefront and IntraLASIK.  If you are determined to meet the requirements for LASIK surgery, the LASIK procedure can be scheduled often the same day as the pre-LASIK examination.  The ophthalmologist will examine your eyes and measure the amount of refractive error and cornea thickness.
